Does HRT cause weight gain?

| |

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is commonly known as hormone therapy (HT). In some regions, it is also known as Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT). This medication is given to women when their body stops producing hormones, usually after menopause. The purpose of giving or receiving HRT is basically to treat menopausal symptoms in women.  Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is provided with prescribed medication that is used to boost the levels of hormones in women lost during menopause.

What is menopause?

Menopause is a natural hormone change process that a woman must undergo in her late forties or early fifties. It happens after an approximate year of your last menstrual cycle. The period of menopause directly impacts your ovaries that stop producing sufficient hormones to maintain female sexual health. These changes may lead to putting a bad effect on female sexual health.

What is premature menopause?

In some cases, women experience menopause in their late thirties or early forties. This is not the correct time for menopause. This condition is known as premature menopause. To treat premature menopause also, women are often prescribed HRT orally or in other forms. Doctors usually recommend Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to women after menopause regularly, unless there is a medical condition preventing it.

Wonders of HRT

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) does wonders by reducing the probability of a couple of diseases like heart problems, osteoporosis, bowel cancer, etc., occurring. However, it may have some side effects on the user. The side effects of HRT may include the development of blood clots or development of breast cancer. Blood clots usually form when HRT is given orally, in the form of tablets, while breast cancer can develop when taken for the long term.

Weight Gain and HRT

Most often, people think that weight gain is often associated with Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Recent studies have proved that a woman has a tendency to gain weight during her middle age whether or not she takes HRT. During menopause, the reasons behind weight gain are age factors and lifestyle. During this period, women experience an increase in their body fat, especially around their abdomen. This happens due to the hormone changes taking place within the body and not because of HRT. Some of you may feel symptoms like bloating, fluid retentions, breast tenderness, etc. when you start taking HRT. These are some of the side effects of HRT that are somewhat misinterpreted as weight gain. These side effects go away once you get used to the medication.
