Climate Controlled Buildings vs. Non-Climate Controlled Storage Buildings: Know the Difference

| |

Most of us have had to move to a different apartment or house at some point in life. During that time, how many people thought, “Why do I have so much stuff?” If it doesn’t fit in your new place, you don’t want to throw your things away. In other cases, maybe the unfortunate event of someone passing left you with possessions that you aren’t sure where to put — but don’t want to get rid of, either. Whatever the case may be, getting a storage unit can help solve the problem of having too much stuff and not enough space for it. Storage units are available in every state throughout America. Roughly 10% of American households use storage units, so there is no shortage of them. Likely you’ve even seen popular shows like “Storage Wars,” where people bid on abandoned units hoping there will be forgotten valuables inside.

What should you look for when you need a storage unit despite the pop culture phenomenon with storage lockers? Do you know the difference between a climate controlled building and a non climate controlled one? Continue reading to learn more about mini storage buildings for your own property!

A Climate-Controlled Storage Building

A climate controlled building is precisely that — a room where you can specifically control the climate. Do you live somewhere that experiences extreme weather? Then you should consider a climate-controlled building. It can be either a typical storage unit or a mini storage building. Extreme weather can be either very hot or very cold. Think of intense heat as 100+ degrees and below-freezing temperatures. Climate-controlled storage units are usually inside and will keep the storage building at a comfortable level. A climate-controlled unit is usually more expensive, as you have to factor in the cost of heating and cooling the unit. It is not utilities per unit, so the price is generally a standard 20-50% higher than non-climate controlled units.

A Non-Climate-Controlled Storage Building

A non-climate controlled storage unit is just the opposite of a climate-controlled storage unit. You don’t always need a climate-controlled storage unit, so the option to save some money is always excellent. In the United States, the first storage units we saw were not climate-controlled. These units are often on the exterior of the buildings, which allow you to drive up to the facilities. It can be convenient because you can offload your car right into the storage space. There won’t be any lugging around inside trying to find your storage unit when you use a non-climate controlled building.

When To Use a Climate Controlled Building

You should use a climate-controlled storage unit when you need to store things that are sensitive to heat. These things could include wood furniture, musical instruments, family heirlooms, documents, and pictures. Things can warp, crack, and break in extreme heat, so you need to know which of your belongings are sensitive to the heat. You should put anything sensitive to extreme cold in a climate-controlled storage unit. That could be anything liquid, for example, that could freeze. Usually, items are more susceptible to heat than cold, but it is good to keep in mind.

When To Use a Non-Climate Controlled Building?

You should use a non-climate controlled storage unit when you don’t have items that are sensitive to heat or cold. In some states, you don’t have to worry about things being exposed to freezing temperatures at all. Also, depending on how long you need to store items, you could get lucky and get away with using a non-climate controlled unit. If you need to keep things between the fall and spring, you could save your money and just use a non-climate controlled unit. If you need to hold them for long periods or in the summer, it is best to know what is safe and what isn’t.

Choosing Between Climate-Controlled and Non-Climate-Controlled Buildings

Consider the answers to these questions before you decide to get a climate-controlled building or not.

  • What items are you storing?

Before choosing a climate-controlled unit or a non-climate controlled unit, the first thing you should do is to inventory what you’ll be storing. Is it anything that will damage with heat? Will cold temperatures affect items? Is humidity also a concern? You can find out all the information you need by contacting the owner of the storage units as well; they can let you know what is included in each unit.

  • Are you storing expensive or irreplaceable items?

If you are storing expensive or irreplaceable items, then you should consider getting a climate-controlled unit. That will ensure that your possessions are safe and less susceptible to any damages.

  • Are you storing these items for a short or long timeframe?

If you store the items for a short amount of time, maybe the climate-controlled units won’t make much of a difference. However, would it make a difference if an emergency arose and you had to leave your possessions in the storage unit for longer? It is something to consider because accidents and emergencies happen.

  • What type of climate do you live in?

Do you live in a climate that gets extremely hot and humid and extremely cold and dry? Are three seasons in the year acceptable to store things in places like a garage? If you could store items in a garage with no worry, then items could be stored in a non-climate controlled unit as well.

Understand Where To Store What: Climate Controlled Buildings vs. Non-Climate Controlled Ones

You want your belongings to stay protected, even if they aren’t in your house right now. These items are priceless, so you want to store them properly. Using a climate-controlled building will ensure your prized possessions stay safe from damage from moisture, among other settling issues. On the other hand, things like vehicles, tools, and outdoor furniture are good examples of items that can function in a non-climate controlled building. Before deciding on one or the other, take inventory and think about your belongings.
