Asians are living in every corner of the world and are famous for their remarkable customs and traditions. Especially the wedding ceremonies in Asian culture truly reflect the empire’s customs and resemblance among its populations. Pakistan is a land of some incredible traditions and customs.
However, the wedding in the sub-continent does not only take place as a union of the groom and the bride but as an alliance among their families, relatives, and friends. The best and legal age for weddings in Asian countries, especially Pakistan, ranges from 19 years for men to 16 years for women. The wedding traditions and customs in Asian culture are a mixture of pleasure, fun, ornamental dressing, and happiness.
Asian Wedding Events
Asian people celebrate their wedding ceremonies with great zeal and exceptional passion. Their wedding ceremonies start with a large number of events and never end within a single day. However, the duration span of Asian wedding ceremonies ranges from one or two weeks or even more.
These wedding events generally include pre-wedding events like engagement, bridal shower, dholki party, ubtan, Mayon, Mehndi, and then the much-awaited biggest day named “Barat.” Barat is the actual wedding day which is followed by some after-marriage functions like Valima and Chauthi. These wedding functions are amazing in their plan, food options, dress selection, and various other details.
In earlier times, people used to live in pretty small houses in deprived conditions with no privileges. Their biggest possession was their daughter’s wedding dress that she is going to wear on her big day. However, now the marriage ceremony has grown to a gigantic extent over the years, and now people give so much attention to every minor detail.
Range of Wedding Events
A wedding is a symbol of culture and traditions. The customs and traditions of Asian weddings go way back and bond to the customs of the Indian subcontinent. Mughals have brought all these wedding traditions and customs into South Asia. So, technically these traditions are associated with the culture and values of the Royal Mughals. Therefore, Asian countries, especially Pakistan, royally celebrate their weddings.
However, such royal Asian weddings do not just occur in Pakistan, as the British Pakistani weddings also have the same royalty and grandness as weddings in South Asian culture. Thus, weddings in Pakistan generally consist of a range of events that are combined together as a whole week celebration.
These Pakistani weddings can even make you forget about your everyday routine as many things are happening during wedding preparations and celebrations. It becomes hard to get back into your mundane routine after such a long period of excitement and fun. Let’s dive into these different Asian wedding functions and check how vibrant and joyful they are.
- The Dholki Function
Some days before the wedding functions start, close friends and family of the groom and bride get together for a “Dholki Party.” Close relatives and friends who live out of the city come to the bride and groom’s place with proper preparation. They aim to stay there till the wedding day and enjoy the dholki event together.
At a dholki party, people gather in the form of a circle and sit on a floor decorated with colorful cushions and rugs. They sing traditional wedding songs at the dholki event on the beat of the dholak. Dholak is basically the most popular two-headed hand drum used for singing songs at all dholki parties. One of the girls plays the dholak while others sing songs, clap, and dance.
Dholki parties have become a tradition of Asian weddings that generally involve a lot of entertainment and fun for the bride and groom’s close family members and friends. This event generally takes place at different places separately for the groom and bride in their respective homes. However, dholki nights are getting reduced with time due to the busiest schedules, like only two or three or maybe a week of dholki is celebrated.
Mayon is the most significant event of Pakistani weddings and is generally taken very seriously in some Asian countries. This event happens only a few days before the marriage, when female friends, family members, and cousins gather around the bride and perform certain rituals.
The function of Mayoun generally includes putting oil in the bride’s hair and ubtan on her hands, face, neck, arms, and feet. These are considered as the most beautiful traditions of Asian weddings. Even at present, every wedding tradition and ritual is approved by the grandmothers of the families to follow it properly.
Mayon is actually a ritual of preparing a bride for her wedding day, and it also plays a key role in enhancing her natural beauty. However, the most considerable thing about this event is that after Mayon, a bride is not allowed to leave home. Because it is considered a bad sign for marriage. Although it is just a myth, many women still take this superstition very seriously.
- Mehndi Night
Before the biggest day, the most important ceremony for a bride is the Mehndi night or henna party. At mehndi night, the bride gets henna patterns on both her hands and feet to enhance beauty. These mehndi designs represent luck, love, and joy in married life, with the groom’s name written on the hand.
All the female family members and friends tend to apply mehndi with less elaborate designs than the bride. The event of Mehndi is famous as the “bride’s day,” which she spends with her close friends and cousins.
- The Nikkah Ceremony or Barat
The most important and essential part of any wedding is the Nikkah. It is a formal ritual where the groom and bride make promises to each other and exchange vows. Before the Nikkah ceremony, the couple is not permitted to see each other.
- Reception or Walima
After the big day, there is another celebration on the day after the Wedding day, called the Walima ceremony. The organizer of this major dinner is the groom’s family after marriage.
Walima is basically a celebration of two individuals coming together for the rest of their lives. The bride often wears a dazzling dress with heavy jewelry provided by the groom’s side at the event. While the groom wears a formal Western tuxedo.
