4×4 Tyres: All You Need to Know

| |

Well, if you think tyres are nothing but a round shape rubber component that surrounds the wheel’s rim, then you’re under the wrong impression. Your tyres are the primary channel that enables traction on the road surface by transferring the overall load of the vehicle from the axle to the wheel designed to absorb road shocks and transmit traction on multiple terrains. Varying in terms of size, structure and types you have Summer and Winter tyres, 4×4, run-flat and all-season tyres. Talking about 4×4 tyres, one can say that they are well known and designed to suit a specific purpose given their versatility different from standard tyres.

Are 4×4 tyres different From Standard tyres?

Tyres are distinctively constructed to suit distinct purposes. Some are meant for off-road terrain while some for on-road terrain, and some others that are suitable for multiple season and terrains. 4×4 tyres are differentiated not only from regular tyres but also between themselves.

  1. The difference with Regular Tyres

One of the major observations while distinguishing between a 4×4 and a regular tyre is the tread construction and the purpose. The 4×4 tyres have a deeper tread construction with wider gaps in between the tread patterns to specifically allow them to retain friction on adverse conditions. Regular tyres with tyre tread construction to keep the car safe and stable in day-to-day and tarmac road conditions, used in the muddy or sludgy surfaces, the regular tyres would rapidly become clogged with mud and sludge losing friction with the ground. Such lack of traction would ultimately cause tyre spinning with no means of either moving forward or backwards.

  1. A 4×4 with 4×4 Variations

Besides the differences with a regular tyre, there are multiple variations within a 4×4 tyre itself.

  • 4×4 Off-road tyres

Specifically designed for off-terrain surfaces, 4×4 tyres feature comparatively larger tread depths. These tyres are essentially designed for operating in rough and unpaved road conditions, for instance, a 4×4 SUV tyre has sharp, rugged tread patterns and reinforced sidewalls. The speciality of these tyres is that the deeper is the tread-depth, the harder it is to get clogged up when traversing an unpaved terrain. Moreover, even if the gaps in the tread pattern are filled with dirt and mud, there’s enough rubber in contact with the ground to retain friction. The 4×4 off-road tyres maintain enough contact with the ground all the time, on a normal road surface than a regular tyre.

  • 4×4 On-road tyres

These on-road 4x4s have comparatively larger tread-depths than the ones found typically in a rear-wheel or front-wheel car. Often referred to as all-terrain Maxxis banden Leeuwarden used in other vehicles. On-road 4x4s are, however unsuitable for off-road use though these days. You may find manufacturers designing them assuming some off-road usage.

  • 4×4 All-terrain tyres

Specifically serving a balanced purpose, they are designed for both on-road and off-road use and are not destined for either. They can be driven off-road reasonably as well as can be driven on-road without extreme wear and fuel consumption. However, they are vulnerable to faster wear than the on-road 4×4; but given the correct surface, they offer superior performance.

Premium quality tyres that have wider tread blocks and reinforced sidewalls to offer superior performance and extreme durability.

Autobanden Leeuwarden (car tires) are manufactured with a special rubber compound offer extreme traction on both on-road and off-road terrains. The specialized contours and tread construction offers grip on muddy and unpaved surfaces making precise steering faster through muddy and slushy conditions.
